Jill, Hillary, Dale and I cruised around the mountain today.  The groomers were pleasant and off piste had a firm base with a few inches on top as Larry mentioned. I noticed quite a few excellent skiers whack some frozen chunks in the ungroomed areas and take some unique spills.  My old bones shudder at the thought. There was an interesting sign posted at the base of the Green Valley chair "Kelly's Gap icy walk/req".

They are working on the access road from 6am until 6pm.  Seems to be an area that has some rockslides.  Expect a 5-10 minute delay as traffic is reduced to one lane.

We started off the day with patchy blue sky, with some low clouds snaking up the valley.  Then more weather moved in. And finally, after lunch, a ripping wind that picked up snow off the ground and tossed it all over the place.  By closing it was just snowing horizontal mode.  Sometimes the wind would hit with an almost explosive force, filling the air with surface snow.

Sometimes the lift would stop.  No small kids to worry about... I was wondering if there was some automatic mechanism that turned off the lifts if the wind hit a certain velocity?  It seemed to work that way.

But in all this the skiing was really good! The parking lot was dry but there was snow on the trees up on the hill.   The freshies provided some very nice skiable stuff to work with.   Off groom was skiable also.

Yes, there was a frozen base underneath it all... Sometimes I would hit the boilerplate, or see that dark patch of real ice.   On Luckyshot I neglected to avoid a death cookie that was nailed down... it deflected my ski in an unpleasant manner, but I recovered.

I really enjoyed all the skiing.   Lot A was basically full, but not a big crowd.  Sometimes you could ski down forest queen all by yourself.  Base meadow is still a mess.  The walk down to Snorting Elk Cellar is still a frozen sheet of ice... could use some sand or gravel.

Great day! Coverage of up to about 8" was encountered on north facing leeward aspects; some of the best turns this year!

Stellar day, just to see some fresh, never mind the icy surface underneath that made steeps + trees a little throttle down in the AM. Warming brought better edging. Powder bowl and lucky trees were highlights. Time to do a freezing level dance to keep it LOW!
