January, 28 Alpental....finally some new snow!

Maybe as much as a foot up top...6" or so down low...with big skis you didn't even touch down on the icey garbage lurking below the freshies. Almost everything is back open again, International, Snakedance, etc....Not quite enough to cover the fat moguls that got built up in Edelweiss Basin, Shot Six was quickly scraped clean down to boilerplate, and a lot of Nash was covered in fresh avy debris from the morning ski patrol activities, but it was still nice to ski some smooth, floaty new snow after weeks of nuthin'.

The new snow was releasing fairly easily on the old icey stuff beneath, so backcountry steeps probably aren't the best idea for a while.

I couldn't agree more. It was really nice to finally ski some new snow. Lots of wind deposited snow had slid all over, but this isn't surprising since the telemetry showed a high gust of 71 last night, and all that new snow fell on ice. But where it was nicely deposited, you didn't even touch the blue ice that lurked elsewhere.

Indeed! Surprisingly nice conditions and the boilerplate is all but a memory. Still snowing there as we left.

Finally... hope it keeps coming.

Damn, made the wrong choice and went to Crystal. 1"- 2" new on top of ice. Off-piste still coral reef without enough new to glide over it. Groomer's only! :'(
