The News Tribune (Tacoma)

Alpental will stay open one more weekend, resort spokeswoman Holly Lippert confirmed this morning.

The Snoqualmie Pass ski area originally planned to close for the season today, however greater than normal snow accumulations is allowing the resort to stay open for another week.

The Summit at Snoqualmie resort will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 12 and 13.

The Summit received 591 inches of snow this season. It averages 444 inches of snow per season.

Lift tickets are $5 at Alpental today.

Good on ya, Alpental!

I tried to get my son to go skiing up there yesterday but he wanted to work on his backyard fort instead. So I did what everyone else around Seattle seemed to be doing yesterday--I spent the afternoon doing yardwork.

Maybe next weekend...

Was there today to check out the cinco de madness. The lure of a 5$ ticket was too strong, and it seems the several thousand other slackers crowding up the mountain today also fell for the lure. At 9:30 got one of last dozen spots or so in Lot One. Chair lines initially not too bad (5-10 min) but by 11ish were more like 20+. Lines plus crowds plus incredibly rapid snowsurface condition deterioration plus need for a cheeseburger sent me townward before one. Nearly 60 degrees by then. When we left sides of road parked through all lots and 1/2 mi downhill.

Took two runs down Billingtons / Trash Can. Much funner back there in slackcountry than it was tangling with the gigantor moguls forming up on main runs. Starting to be some gliders and moats opening up now on slackcountry runs but overall what we saw out there still filled in and fun. In the greater surroundings, copious wet slide evidence on nearly every visible mountainside, including some beefy, trenchy ones on the higher half of Snoqualmie.
