Powder Alert for Sunday and Beyond
Sent out: 2:13pm Thursday
Expect consistent dumpage ahead. Prepare and clear your calendar next week -- and beyond. The powder will be calling you. You must obey, there is no choice.
Resistance is futile.
What a winter! La Nina has delivered, as promised – and the best may be yet to come.
Sometimes La Nina will favor the second half of the winter here in the Pacific Northwest. I have been waiting to see that trend on the computer models. That inclination is now emerging. During the 1999 La Nina, the month of February was truly epic. Probably the best solid month of snow we’ve ever had. There was new snow every day at Mt Baker and most Washington ski areas in February of 1999. It snowed 6 to 12” or more every day, with low snow levels. They even had to shut the lift down and close for a day or two, to dig the buried chairs out.
Currently the snow pack is 110-180% of normal, so coverage is excellent. We’ve had a bit of a pause in the last ten days with sunshine, some light snow and chilly weather. Get ready, because the Cascade snow machine is gonna get cranking again. La Nina will nudge the jet stream from its split position into Alaska and California, then point the jet in our direction by Sunday and to a greater extent next week. The jet will consolidate storms and direct them into our Cascades.
We may be in for 10-14 days of consistent snowfall (maybe longer) with an occasional 12-36 hr break. Moderate to low snow levels. It’s gonna be good. Remember, I told you about the storm cycle that hit mid Dec to Jan 8th , well in advance. This could be better.
Increasing clouds Saturday, possible snow later in the day.
Expect 3-9” of snow Sunday, with new snow during the day 1-3”. Outstanding
quality, with a 500ft snow level – might be some snow in the lowlands. Be careful on the drive up.
A moderate snow Tuesday and Wednesday 6-12”, SL 500ft
A break later Wednesday into early Thursday
New storm later Thursday into Friday. 8-15” SL 1000- 2000ft
Can you say EPIC?
My guess on best days will be Wednesday and Friday, difficult to time this far in advance. Timing and magnitude of storms may vary, but an active pattern is evolving.
Don’t forget night skiing too. The Summit and Stevens will be fantastic, next week.. I was at the Summit last night, fabulous snow, no crowds, a tad chilly – bundle up. Note to self: purchase clear goggles for night skiing.
If you haven’t been up yet – wake up and smell the coffee, you are missing one of the best seasons ever.
I skied Crystal, White Pass, Stevens, The Summit and Mission -- all in the last ten days.
Mix it up. Variety is the spice. Take a tour. Hit Loup Loup , Bluewood and Baker too!
Mt Spokane and 49 Degrees are waiting for your tracks.
PS: The first weekend in February also looks like a powder fest
Happy Trails.
Powder for the People – That’s my platform – but I’m not running for anything.
