Well, after a week of the Northway chair, and trying very hard to find a silver lining I give up. I'm not qualified to judge greed or ego as a motive for a 3 million dollar mistake that we all get to live with. JK must be proud to have the states largest lift serviced terrain, even if it sucks. From a patrol standpoint I know it's a nightmare. How do they sweep the area let alone respond to a call when most skiers have no idea where in Northway they are. I do know that Crystal's volunteer patrol was cut by 40% this year, down to 18 each weekend. These guys train and cross train, string rope, break trail etc etc and they get cut back to save a few season passes. I really appreciate the ones that are not on duty still being on the hill to help if needed. Most areas are trying to recruit more vollys and safety patrols, not drive them off the hill. Oh a more positive note Silver Basin today was like a date with a porn star. Whoooo Hoooo, more more and more.

I have ridden Crystal since I was 10. I rode the past five days, from south to north and all powdery spaces in between. While I agree with Lowell that the new N back may be a problem for patrollers, it is most certainly not a mistake. The gapers will ski the sidehilly unpleasant otto bahn, the boarders will love the little cliffies, and for the rest of us locals, we will do what we have always done, explore the beautiful terrain that is crystal mountain. The last three days have been the busiest days this season, yet I (and many other like minded explorers) have been skiing untracked glorious powder runs in relative isolation. I climbed the King three times today and the last run was just as good as the first. Crystal provides us south puget sound folks with some of the only easily accessible winter access to backcountry bliss. Trash it if you will, complain about them making money. Better yet, go somewhere else. I for one will drive from enumclaw to mecca for many years to come.
By the way, Friday was like being in your private Warren Miller movie all day long.
