Though it was foggy at Crystal today, the snow was of remarkable quality. It was the driest and lightest snow I have ever seen at Crystal. When compressed, it would fall as individual flakes with no balling. And it was very deep especially as it snowed hard all day.
The snow was light and deep and slid off the slope easily. I triggered a number of slides while skiing thigh deep powder. In the afternoon the ski patrol closed Doors because of avalanche potential.
By the end of the day the snow had gotten slightly damper. All the groomers were packed powder with bumps and chop. relatively uncrowded for a Saturday at Crystal.
As my son and I were riding up the High Campbell at around 3, a ski patroller rushed to the chair with a dog followed by 3 other patrollers. At the top they rushed to get going with a stretcher. They were on their way to attend to the person who died of an avalanche.
