Today was probably the best day skiing I've had in three or more years (and I ski a lot, so that's no small feat). I honestly don't know if I've ever skied such deep blower powder (pushing my pole into the snow, it went all the way to the handle before hitting that ice layer) with bluebird AND the upper traverse open. First tracks down the Hummox/Draft Dodger area on multiple laps and Wall Street were beyond sensational.
On a more serious note, though, dropping off a pillow-drop cliff above Ghost Bowl, I came out of my bindings and fell into a Bergschrund below the cliffs. I was buried up to my waist, and the edge of the hole was probably 4 or 5 feet above my head. I couldn't move my legs, and ended up using my shovel to dig myself out. Climbing out of the hole, I saw my skis sitting at the edge of it, still perpendicular to the slope. I'm still not entirely sure how it occurred, but what I know is that I aired about a 10 foot cliff, aiming for a pillow that I was going to turn off and air another 5-ish footer into Ghost Bowl. Somehow, after landing on the pillow both my toe pieces released and I fell straight down into the Bergschrund. Thankfully, I went in rightside-up and no snow followed me in.
Ultimately, it was a serious reminder about how dangerous the Alpental backcountry can be and about using safe skiing practices. My friends were probably less than 100 yards down hill, but they couldn't hear me, I couldn't hear them, and for some reason (perhaps because I was buried, perhaps because of the distance) they couldn't pick me up on their transceivers. I suspect it was scarier for them than for me, since I knew I was ok. But I digress. Be safe out there and, when you are skiing waist deep pow in the back/side-country, make sure you keep your eye on each other.

Again I'm glad that you emerged O.K. after your incident. I ran into you at the patrol shack on 2 yesterday with Jeff B. and Alpental Corey. Sounded pretty scary. It was a good thing that you had your gear.
What A Day! Definitely two of the best days I've ever seen at Alpental and probably anywhere for that matter. I was up there Tuesday and Wednesday and consider myself very lucky! It seemed like all the regulars were on the hill and plenty of fresh lines for everyone. Much thanks to Alpental Corey for showing us a stash or two. He keeps a quick pace an I believe he ended up lapping us by the end of the day. Also Thank you to my new best patroler friend Jay who shared his thirty years of recon at Alpental with us so generously. Just feed him power bars and fluids and he will show you great white way. Thank you soo much.
Jeff and I caught the first and last chairs on 2 and ended the day with a boot pack up Pineapple and loitered until 5:30 not wanting such a truly epic day to end.

WoW! Thanks for the reminder!
I was up there by myself yesterday and resisted the tremendous temptation to follow people I didn't know into the BC. (...a decision I would have made differently 3 years ago)
Still... it was a good day. I was able to find some fresh snow on Snake Dance

Yesterday was epic, we turned 7 laps.
Today was great to, and hardly anyone on the mountain.
Good cautionary story, glad it had a happy ending... Just reminds us all how important it is to not get to caught up in the excitement and remember to keep eyes-on your ski partners.
As for following people you don't know...
Two things to consider.
First, you don't know where they might be leading you.
Second, if you are shadowing them, it's possible that you could trigger something above them.
We had someone shadow us out to Draft Dodger today (2/22), didn't know where he was going, only that there was a party (including Alpental Cory) in front of him. So we stopped and took a moment to make an introduction so everyone was aware that we had an additional member to our party. And so our new friend was also aware of everyone he was following.
I guess the point is, be safe, don't shadow. Introduce yourself, make friends, ski safe.
