December 16th, 2006 - Willamette Pass, OR was created by stoudema
A couple of us blasted up to Willamette Pass today and were rewarded with deep powder snow (about 18 inches of new). Fresh powder runs all day make the legs feel tired at night!
Normally I wouldn't post about this kind of trip, but I thought it important to say that the snow was stable in most places, but I did bust off a small small slab on the backside (did I say small?). After looking around a little bit, there was a definite layer about 12 inches down. This was between Junes Run the Cliff Area, while the snow at the rest of the ski area was plush pow and didn't slab. It may be important to keep this kind of info in the back of your head if you plan on doing any backcountry in the OR cascades in the next few days.........oh yeah, there was definite wind loading!

Wind loading? Hmmm. [sarcasm]I didn't notice any.[/sarcasm]
On my ride up with our fearless weatherman, he told me they did some avy work on the backside before opening. I guess they managed to knock loose a couple of small slabs on the rock spine back in the trees and skiers left of the lift line (you know the one). Not surprised to hear you kicked one up where you did, though.
Too bad I couldn't catch up to you guys. My legs were pretty much toast after lunch. Never been so happy to be so sore.
