Thank you for the report. Can anyone take the attached photo, or create a new one, and mark the slope that slid. Perhaps someone with PhotoShop. There are quite a few slopes that have slid in that area...
Great trip report. From what I see most of the comments are not negative but honest comments on how others assessed the avalanche hazard for that day/storm cycle. Everyone is trying to learn and apply...
An 'upside down snowpack' is also referred to when a storm comes in cold and goes out warm. You get low-density snow (cold dry) on the bottom, then when the temperatures warm up the top laye...
The first photo and comment "blitzed by blow-down before the falls" looks like it could be avalanche debris.
Looks like a nice day...Did you recognize any stability issues up to the point where you kicked off the Avy?
What time did you start skinning and what time did you start skiing down?
Was there plenty of coverage on the approach above Reflection Lake? I assume it might have been a little thin? Thanks
Moscawulff,Thanks for the 'heads up' on conditions you found at Source Lake. Your observations and decisions to move on even though you saw obvious signs of instability I found interesting....
Dan,With PhotoShop I can make anybody look good...accually we all know Chris is good on that splitboard!I know I am exceding the photo limit but had to be fair and post a shot of Dan. I hope I d...

Thanks to everyone for their comments and theories.I am sure this could be analyzed and many theories could be possible, here are my thoughts in simple, non scientific terms. The (X) slope slid because...
Pete,Glad you have been taking in the discusion and absorbing all you can. However, if I were you I would enrole in a 3-day level one avalanche course as soon as possible. Personally I think it take...
Lowell,Thanks for you explaination and additional info about the 1977 avalanche where the winds loaded the west slopes. Noting the direction of the prevailing winds is important but winds can ch...
Pete,The pink areas are not meant to represent the only hazardous areas. As I wrote they are some - not all - avy hazard areas in the photo.Cross loading is correct, which most likely built up...
Thanks for all the comments. Here is another photo marking some of the areas - but not all - that could have slid had a skier or snowshoer ventured out there at the time.
ron j-Yep, I was over in the Tatoosh.Rusty Knees-Yes, 100% windloaded.I have a question for all of you avalanche students. Why did the above slope slide and the rest of the obvious avy slopes around...
Ian,I haven't seen a post about Tam MacArther Rim in a long time, that used to be one of my old stomping grounds and is a great tour.Is the warming hut you speak of the one at the end of the plow...
Volcanogrrl is correct, the bridge and a good portion of the trail was washed out from the rains of this past fall. The trail above Cloud Cap is well defind and easy to follow.Another pic for yo...
Great day on the Dome,Me and my buddy Dave were carving up the corn that day as well...and what a great day it was!All this time I have been reading posts by Volcanogrrl, and what do I do but pass you...
Dave,Lookin good on those new skis!Roger,I have a couple good pic's of you, guess I'll have to start a new post. Good to meet you.Don
Tony is right, your digital camera will stop working due to the battery getting cold, not the camera it self. Keeping your battery in a inside pocket will cure your problem...or what I do is carry an...
Rippy,Would you mind sharing the experience you had in Bullion Basin, and the exact location you experienced instability. Knowledge is Power! Thanks!
Do not take this the wrong way but you might want to consider taking an Avalanche Awareness Course. Many people have died skiing/snowboarding in the backcountry at Crystal when the upper mountain is cl...
I thought I would throw in a photo from Dec 2nd.
Another overview of the mine...
Memories from the 80's...Here is a shot from 'April Bowl', we've seen great powder well into April.Early days of Hatcher Pass LodgeIndependence Mine
Nice, Nice, Nice! Looks like you hit the killer Pow!The shots when the sun came out are especially nice, better than what's on their web site. You should submit a few to them...
Two friends and I were skiing in the same area that day. We happened to top the ridge shortly before the two people that were caught in the slide made it back to the ridge after climbing out of...
