4 days of backcountry skiing accessed from Scottish Lakes High Camp. The camp is closed for the season, however having become a regular on work parties has it's benefits. I had contact Don Hanson at High Camp for some advice on skiing in the area from Cascade Meadows, he offered to let me use the camp as a base camp for day tours up in the high country. Wow how could I refuse that offer. Skiing all day with a cozy cabin instead of my cramped bivy sack. Now don't get me wrong I love to camp out, but as I get older, a cozy cabin with a woodstove is more appealing.
The skiing on McCue Ridge was great, I found the upper North facing slopes above Lake Donald to be in super condition. The spring corn was great all afternoon long. Yesterday afternoon a weather front was coming in bringing with it strong southerly winds and snow flurries. At 2:00 A.M. heavy snow was falling, however at first light it was a snow and rain mix. Great, a 4 mile slog in the rain, but by 9:30 A.M. when I started to ski out of camp for the parking lot, the sun was peaking out and the Gore-tex stayed in the pack after all. Eventually the ski's where slotted and the long hike with a not so light pack continued. You know 4 miles of downhill skiing with a big pack is more fun than four miles of downhill hiking with that same pack. God has a sense of humor, on my hike down to mid mountain, while on the Old Julius Trail, I came across a lonely finger of snow that looked like it need some ski tracks on it. What a nice brake in the hike out.
This trip marks over 40 days spent up at High Camp since I first started going in 2009. After all these trips it's starting to feel like I have a fairly decent feel for the place. I look forward to the next 40 days.
