Scott and I skied around Chair Peak in warm temperatures and wet snow with foggy and intermittent near whiteout at times. We saw slide debris and heard an impressive tree crunching slide coming off Kaleetan as we traveled up from Melakwa lake. After viewing past trip reports I sure would like to ski those slopes in colder and dryer conditions with better vis. Todays soundtrack: Johnny Winter ---> STILL ALIVE AND WELL
Did this on Friday. Went over Pineapple instead of Bryant Col due to fear of cornice drops off of Bryant. A big one let loose off Hemlock when we were heading up climbers right-side in Pineapple basin, so we did an about-face and headed up over Pineapple. The traverse from the backside of Pineapple to below Bryant Col was sloppy, but safe. We were planning on heading up the steep gully to get on Kaleeten, but again, the warmth and the cornices kept us bee-lining for Melakwa Pass. Only good turns of the trip were off the pass down to Chair Peak lake. We skied a steep gully from there down to Snow lake. The gully was gross. Turn-turn, move aside and let the glop run, repeat, etc. Once down on the lake the destruction was under way - big crowns below the north face of Chair and tons of debris piled high on the lake. See pics.
