We left Seattle Monday at 1:30 pm, drove to Trout Lake via Randle (no issues), filled out forms and paid our money to The Man ('Northwest Volcano Pass'=$10/person + Wilderness permit (free) + Climbing Register (free), had dinner, and camped at the end of FS 8040, just short of its end. Departed at 5 am, summited, and were back by 2 pm. As we expected there was no one policing the Volcano Pass requirement. Skied our ascent route (Suksdorf Ridge) as the SW Chutes is nice, but extracts a price in the traverse back to the main drag (did this last July). Also, the top of the Chutes was icy in the late morning (cold wind). Fair to good skiing. Lovely day. More skiers/boarders (about a dozen) than not (four). 7000vf, 10 miles.
Thanks for the report, Brent.
Sounds like you parked fairly close to Cold Springs?

Parked about a quarter mile from the TH.
Hiked to about 6500' and skinned from there to the top.
I used ski crampons/ice axe on the climb from the Lunch Counter to the False Summit.
