Seven of us, packed in two cars, left the parking lot of QFC in  Capitol Hill at 7:44 pm on Friday. Ingrid, my navigator, unfolds road directions to Trout Lake taken from MapQuest.  This is my third trip to Mnt. Adams and I don't remember the exact details of the drive, but what I do remember is that it was straightforward. The MapQuest directions spread across a couple of pages. After a few hours of driving, we begin our travel on dirt road 23, just past Randle.  Instead of following it to Trout Lake, we follow the MapQuest directions instead, which put us on dirt road 21, then onto dirt road 56, followed by SIX painfully slow miles of travel on somewhat overgrown rough road 5601.  The six miles were abusive to Matt's low-clearance Subi, the second vehicle.  Afterwards, we run into dirt road 2329, stop to ponder for a bit, consult the WA Gazetteer, and then finally find our way back to 23. Four hours and 20 minutes later, we were filling out climbing permits at the ranger station and picking up our hot lunch sacks.  Note to self: beware of MapQuest directions.

In the morning, we drove to Morrison Creek campground.  The road was snow free so we continued, but stopped about 1/4 mile past where everybody else stopped.  I find out later that it would have been possible to drive to within 1/2 mile of Coldsprings campground.  A fallen tree blocks the road.

By 11 am, we're booting and bush whacking from 4700'.  Around 5200', we're skinning through patchy snow.  Scattered clouds overhead, but the other than that, the weather was beautiful.  We made camp around 7500', near the base of the small Crescent Glacier.  After 1.5 hours of relaxing, a handful of us decided to go skiing. We skinned up to Lunch Counter and skied back to camp.  The corn was great, even late in the afternoon.

It was completely clear on Sunday. We started out at 7am. As we climbed, the snow started to soften.  Unfortunately, above Pikers Peak, it didn't look like good corn skiing.  A layer of small ice chunks blanketed the snow.  Even with clear skies in mid-afternoon it didn't soften much above Pikers Peak. We skied from the summit.  The first part of the ski was interesting, but fun. The descent from Pikers Peak to camp was incredibly good, turn after turn.  Here's a video of the ski down: http://www.leang.com/kam/gallery/movies/

Overall, an excellent ski.  There is still plenty of coverage and by this weekend, the road should be clear to Coldsprings campground.

Nice report, Kam.
Thanks.
Great viddy too.
Looked like a great trip.
How big was the fallen tree that blocked the road?

Hey Ron,

Thanks for the kind words.  I didn't see the tree, only heard about it from other skiers.  You know me, I prefer the less traveled route...bush whacking!;D  I'm sure the road will be clear by this weekend though if you decide to head that way.

Say, nice turns on Foss Peak with Jerry and Mad Dog!

The log was removed by Sunday afternoon.  The road should be passable to the trailhead by this wknd.

Cool.
Isn't this a great forum.
Thanks, Jon, for the update.
Kam, did I miss Jerry's report somewhere?  >:(
Charles, you done good coming up with this forum.
It's a great tool.
Thanks.

Nice report Kam, sounds like you camped about where we did. See you soon  8)      JW

Nice job Kam and friends.  Looks like a great time with a good weather window.   ;D

Ron-
You are so right.  This forum is really valuable, with posts like this one from Kam.  I really enjoyed watching the film, and the access info was so good.  According to the rangers, the road won't be open for another month, so it was great to hear firsthand from someone in the field.
Looks like Adams is in primo condition.

Great job Kam! I really enjoy the videos. I'm sure Metcalf is smiling enjoying your adventures. Have you considered a Goat Rocks tour? If you have-consider throwing my name in the hat. I will hopefully get some more info today from my Goat Rocks on field consultant. I laugh reading about your bush wacking adventures. It  reminds me of why people avoid following me skiing when I bring up a new place to ski, that I think I can get to if I just.... Some how it always leads to a bush wack. Keep up the great work! And as always Keep the Dream Alive!

Keeping the dream alive?  With much respect, if you want to talk serious about keeping the dream alive than I suggest you look no further than Sky Sjue's (http://staff.washington.edu/skykilo/) or Ben Manfredi's websites.  I think their most recent adventures brings this to the forefront.  Good job guys on your adventure into the Pickets last week, and your ski descents of Mt. Fury and Luna Peak.

Joedabaker:

I know nothing about the Goat Rocks tour but would love to do it. How's the weather looking for this weekend anyway?  I was thinking about heading out for the day on Sunday.

I finally got my slides back from the Mount Adams ski.  Here's a collage of misc shots from the trip.  I made the collage to show highlights of the trip, but also to keep from breaking the rules of posting more than one image.

As for bush whacking, it's great!

David-I am very impressed with Sky's adventures. Thanks for sharing the link. I guess one could say the Sky's the limit.

Kam- Great collage! I hope to get out on Sunday. I think the weather looks to be fair on Sun. If weather is workable we could hook up. I sent you an e-mail on your site. Great Pictures!

It is so cool to have access to such great info. All hail the founders!

Joe

The collage is a great idea! Thanks for creatively working within the photo posting guidelines.

Great info and story. Does anyone have an opinion on the snow condition for adams this weekend, June 28 - 29? It has been a very sunny june. Thanks Rich C
