Arrived at Paradise around 8:15 a.m. with the gate open. No new snow, road clear, no problems. There seems to be this temperature inversion hanging around the PNW that's getting pretty boring, and making our BC skiers really scrape the bottom of the barrel for skiable snow. It was more like late spring early summer conditions at Paradise, with the berms and banks of snow that were starting to accumulate around Paradise almost completely gone. With sunny skies, warm conditions and not wanting to carry or hike to the Muir snowfield, for enough snow coverage, our destination changed to a closer spot with enough possible coverage. Looking around we decided to try the Mazama Ridge. The angle of the sun had been warming the SW facing slopes producing spring "corn" conditions. After learning the hard way, many years ago to NOT leave good snow for better snow, we yo-yoed our hearts out until the suns angle changed and that beautiful corn started to harden. It turned out to be a great day of skiing, only seeing three other people who were not skiers. BTW the lower Paradise Valley Road is so bare that until there is any new snow, it's a long carry back up, to the upper Paradise parking lot. We do have some great photos that should be ready to post shortly.

The Rangers have posted signs warning skiers/boarders that there is not enough coverage to ski below Pan point. From the looks of it, the rock skis won't even help here.
Surprised we didn't see you from a distance; we just hiked high skyline w/o skis and wished we had brought them becuze there were quite of few nice snow patches. abc 8)

One of the advantages of knowing the area, like you, is to know where those snow "fixes" are.   :D
You and Regine would have had a good time skiing, the snow was really good.

You're right, Andy.  There were some decent lines despite the meager coverage overall.
Here, Mad Dog's background gives all and idea of what's left of a few select spots:

She's not wearing a helmet! ;)  You all should realize with such low snow cover and such hard snow in places a helmet is worthwhile :D abc

Not only no Helmet but lack of pack and kneepads also! I'll bet she doesn't even have sunscreen on eh? No wonder they call her "Mad Dog" ;)

Sun screen  8) what's that?  Just got back from Mexico, roasted to a golden brown, what would I need sun screen for  ;D.  After two weeks in Puerto Vallerta it sure felt good to be back on the mountain, finding some great snow, and yo-yoing to our hearts content.

"A clever skier will often find an oasis of good snow while the rest of the party -- within a few yards of him -- are struggling with crust."  (Sir Arnold Lunn)

We did find our oasis on Sunday  :)

She don't need no stinkin' kneepads - she's only got free-heels on the way up!
