The company I work for has a project underway in Adak Island, Alaska at the western end of the Aelutian chain.
The island has a 4000' mountain caled Mt. Moffat.
While there on business I decided to take my AT gear.
On Saturday I got the superintendent to drive me along a dirt track to about 1000' ft up the hill. From there I skinned up to about 3000' . As I was alone and the slopes above steepend to avalanche slopes I decided that was far enough. The island is subject to nearly constant gale force winds and although it was relatively calm that day the snow was straguli hardpack with ice. ( a bit like Muir at present. There where pockets of chalky dry powder up to 12" deep in wind sheltered zones. The views where magnificent adn I could seen the Bering sea suurounding the mountain on three sides. After admiring the view for a few minutes I skied back down to my waiting workmate.
Adak up to about 5 years ago had about a 5000 person navla base. It is no particly deserted and had only 75 permanent residents. It's a starky beautiful place and spooky.
Thereused to be a rope tow on the island on Mt. Moffat during it's heyday. Anyway it was a great little tour in a very strange place. 8)
