...and we're told "it's not a money problem."

Actually, I read hearsay reports that Randy King said it was in anticipation of the sequester. And I've read other reports that he said it didn't have anything to do with budget. Which is why I've been trying for a couple weeks to get a written explanation. To-date, no dice. Offers to talk on the phone, but steadfast avoidance of sending anything written.

And for the record, a closure of the gate a Longmire for a few days is nowhere near a record. After the November 2006 floods the entire park was closed at all entrances for the entire winter. EXCEPT...the guide services were allowed to use the back road and bridge into Longmire and continue to conduct their business in the park. So no public access at all for months, but RMI et al were allowed in.

Folks, if you don't like it, I strongly encourage you to do something about it. You can email Randy King, the park super, randy_king@nps.gov. The NPS Director is Jon Jarvis, jon_jarvis@nps.gov. Griping on a board like without further action will not accomplish anything aside from misery having company.

That was not the kind of record I was referring to; they made up a good excuse for that record (flood damage); there is no excuse for the new record.

Since there was clearly a wholly viable way to Longmire that the guide services were allowed to use, and the flood damage was all below Longmire (Sunshine Point and Kautz Creek), I don't really see how it was in any way a "good" excuse. It's certainly no better than today's assertion that the 'weather looks kinda icky', and the accompanying we don't have the budget, we don't have the plow drivers, we have to plow anyway game of whack-an-excuse.

From the telemetry it looks like it's clear and sunny at Muir today, and the gate is not opening.
