I don't know the answer, but I saw this one time in September 2009 too, after I finished a climb of the South Rib on Guye Peak. One guy was stuck on the Source Lake side too. Always wondered about that.

They had to do this last year unfortunately due to vandalism and/or theft of construction equipment (as I was told by a worker), and though I don't speak for the pass or know for certain, I'd imagine it's a similar situation as they have a lot of equipment out for the improvements happening at mid-mountain.

As tempting as it is when it's un-locked it's a slightly longer skin to get to Source Lake now.

Sadly alpine-earth has it correct on cause/effect.  Theft and vandalism seem to be trouble everywhere these days and the ski areas are no exception.  It's now pretty standard to have gates and locks on many access points to try and make carting stuff away a little less convenient so that's the reason behind the one at Alp and it's been this way during summer season for quite a few years.  Best not to think you'll be out before it gets locked and yes, we've had people trapped when they don't get that it REALLY might happen "at any time".  Another quirky inconvenience is that some of the folks who are up for "excercise" insist on parking as close to the snow as possible and are often right in the location that the maintenance crew needs to have clear for equipment access.  I've never really figured that one out, I guess it just doesn't occur to some that their actions may impact others. Most people out for a walk DO get it, avoid the facilities, and stay away from the lifts which also really do start without warning on occasion.  I've been around on some weekends preparing for construction projects and can't unfortunately take the time to always hike so we might use the lifts any day of the week. We do try and give a "warning bump" but best practice is just to stay away from the machinery.  Huge thanks to all of you who are so understanding.  As far as Nash goes, I skinned and skied last Sunday - definately had been beat up by the new snow sluffing but still a ton o fun in my book.  LOTS of snow down low still, had a good run down through the near-back. Starting to corn up in some spots. /G

Hi all,
I am heading up to hit Nash this Sat. on my way over the pass for fathers day and was wondering what the base coverage might be like, should I bring some approach shoes or will I be able to skin up from the base?
I haven't been able to make it up since the 21st of May so I am looking forward to it.

Thanks in advance for any info
Mike
