Mt Rainier Extends Paradise road hours

Mount Rainier National Park officials said Monday they will extend the evening weekend hours on the Longmire to Paradise road starting Saturday.

When conditions allow the road to be open — it was closed Monday because of avalanche danger — the uphill gate will close at 6 p.m. The road and downhill gate will close at 7 p.m.

The hours Mondays through Fridays will remain as they are now, with the uphill gate closing at 4 p.m. and the downhill gate and the road closing at 5 p.m.

Park crews will continue to open the gate at Long-mire at 9 a.m., as long as conditions allow. The road between the Nisqually entrance and Longmire is open year-round, unless closed by conditions.

Appears to start march 8th. Better but No relief for us retirees/mid week skiers yet.

Once again I have to ask, what resources do they now have that they didn't have last fall when the 9-5 winter schedule was announced?  While longer weekend hours are good news, to me this just proves the arbitrariness and fundamental dishonesty of their earlier press release claiming they didn't have sufficient staff for staggered shifts.

I suspect their visitation was way down in Feb.

Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend. I suspect that's a big motivation for bumping the gate closing later in the day.
