Mapping Software for the Mac was created by danpeck
I'm looking for good mapping software for the Mac. Topo! doesn't seem to work very well on the mac.

Any suggestions out there?

Currently I use Topo Maps app on my iPhone and iPad and like it a lot, but as far as I know I can't trace routes. It is basically a good field map and accurately gives my position on USGS maps.

So now I'm looking for something more sophisticated to use on my desktop computer for trip planning etc.

I've found this useful:

I've used MacGPSPro for the last few years with success -- www.macgpspro.com .  Its a bit quirky, but handles both USGS and USFS Topos, supports route planning, import/export to GPS devices, and the major interchange formats (.kml, .gpx, etc).  It can generate key inputs for a tour plan (see: mountainschool.blogspot.com/2010/04/route-planning-how-to.html ) but you still need to do the time calculations.

I've also used Garmin BaseCamp on the Mac, but have not found a way to effectively print Topos, and think its not as well suited for the task.

Cheers,

JR

I'm a mac user and wrote my own online tool with a bunch of input from TAY folks:

www.hillmap.com

It is quite quirky (especially printing maps) but there are some tools that are well suited for planing ski tours in the PNW like the side by side satellite and topo views and the slope angle tools.

You can draw routes and download them to gpx.

There are how to articles by my wife and I here:

Ryan, I LOVE hillmap. I guess I need to use it more and learn better what it can do. I would like a nice printing app. Also, can hillmap provide a trip profile in terms of elevation gain and loss? And can I upload gps way points? I'll check out your tutorials.

I tried Gaia GPS when it was first released and found it to be buggy. Maybe it has improved over the last year or two.

I'll look into the Macgpspro as well.

Thanks for the input so far folks!

You can upload gpx files by dragging them onto the window or using the link in the tools menu though stuff gets collapsed into one track.

It does have simple trip profiling on the paths tab.

Printing works well (link in upper right or on the tools menu) but you have to adjust the print scaling to get high res. I'm also link to Caltopo's* print functionality which lets you download a pdf to print.

*Caltopo is another great mapping site, Matt the creator lets me use lots of his map layers which are the best USGS and FS scans available. His site is focused more on stacking layers then side to side view and has different UI and features.
