I thought I could escape the lowest life forms at the top of Palmer. In an attempt to extend the life of our boots my wife and I wore tennis shoes from the parking lot to the bottom of the mile. I stashed our shoes with some water and food in an old book bag above the top Palmer terminal. Checked on the bag about every 30 minutes all day. We finished the last of our water about 2 and it was stolen between then and 2:30. I imagined that there was a slight possibility that this would happen so I didn't leave anything in the bag that I cannot go without. I drove home in socks and my wife still filled our growler on the way home at Fearless Brewing wearing her ski boots. Knowing that this lowlife is currently active I will be changing my practices in the mountains. If I do stash low value items in the future I will probably be taking more care to hide them.
BTW. We had a great day skiing, hard pack and even a little windblown fluff. The beer from Fearless was great too.

That's pretty lame. Seems like people leave bags up there all the time - I wonder why they would want your shoes? We were up there skiing on Friday, too - not bad!

People do leave bags up there all of the time. I talked to the staff at Timberline and they said that theft of unattended gear happens pretty much all the time too. Probably just a couple of bad apples stealing gear every week. I knew it was a problem but after hearing how frequent thefts are I am going to use extreme caution to make sure my important items are attended to. I may still stash low value items but I'll take care to hide them or something to make it harder for our thief.

That works at Alpental sure -- but think of name of that ski area with the Palmer lift whose top elevation is 8,540ft and the base of the Magic Mile lift is at the area's name.

Lame.

Yeah, no trees anywhere near there. Maybe bury next time? Never had this problem. However, I pity the fool that snakes any of my approach shoes, stinky.
