Glacier Skiing/Snowboarding and Crevasse Rescue was created by Darryl
Thanks, Marcus, for allowing me to post this course announcement.
The Mountaineers' Glacier Skiing/Snowboarding and Crevasse Rescue course will help you to learn the skills to safely ski or snowboard on glaciers. You should be able to ski or board the equivalent of an ungroomed single black diamond slope with a weighted day pack, similar to the weight of a rope and crevasse rescue gear. This course includes 4 workshops and an overnight field trip on Mt. Rainier. Students will practice roped travel and crevasse rescues. The course provides instruction on: route finding, traveling and camping on glaciers, belaying, prusiking, and crevasse rescue systems.
The required equipment includes: metal edge skis and climbing skins or snowboard with an uphill climbing system (skins, approach skis or snowshoes), shovel, avalanche probe, avalanche transceiver, and crevasse rescue equipment.
You must be a Mountaineer member and have either graduated or obtained equivalency for the Basic Avalanche course.
The course workshops are conducted at the Mountaineers' building in Seattle, 7700 Sand Point Way NE, and start at 6:30 pm. The schedule is
4/19: Glacier Travel and Equipment
4/26: Knots and Belaying
5/3: Knots, Belaying and Prusiking
5/10: Crevasse Rescue Systems
5/14 and 5/15: Field Trip, Mt. Rainier
The course cost is $135. Register for the course using this link .

FWIW... The Mountaineer's Glacier Travel and Crevasse Rescue course for Skiers and Boarders (now organized and administered by Darryl), is the best learning experience I have ever encountered, (my assessment being based on my measure of new information/skills learned for energy/resources/time expended. And I am a seminar junkie
). I equate it to trying to get a drink out of a fire hose.
We find that even seasoned glacier climbers knowing rescue systems still find the class worth the effort and cost due to the additional training and insights in how to safely stow skiing gear in preparation for climbing up a rope or being extracted from a crevasse by skiing teammates.
That's why I have chosen to "give blood" back to the backcountry skiing community over the years by helping with this course.
Jerry White's intro video to this course is posted HERE . It is worth watching. Thank you Jerry for that contribution.

Cool!
I assume I can just pay and become a Mountaineer? Any suggestions how to get the waiver for Basic Avy? - I've been to some presentations and read books
Thank you
Ivo

Yeah, I think all you need to join the mounties is a few frogpelts and an identity.
Rumor has it that Gerry Haugen is considering doing a late season additional basic avy class (a one evening lecture and a one day field trip) to meet the avy requirements of the Glacier Travel class.
You might want to post here if you're interested in taking it.
Darryl also mentioned that a non-Mountaineers avy class would likely meet the equivalency requirements as long as the training was administered by a recognized reputable provider and they issue a certificate of completion.
