Gearx seconds skins was created by maryg
I am looking at buying Glidelite Mix skins from Gearx.com. They offer marked-down 2nds or blemished 2010 versions of each model. Anyone have thoughts on buying seconds?

All the reports of blemished or seconds quality skins that I have heard have been good, meaning the person couldn't see what exactly made them less than perfect. Usually the stuff on sale is limited to whatever widths they have left. Today's fat skis always seem to be much wider than any skins that gearx has left on sale.
Are you buying the mohair mix skin for a reason other than price?
I am really happy with my CSD skins, which are probably the best bang for the buck you can find as far as quality skins go. I like the twin tip version with the bungee connecting the front tip ring to the skin and the matching bungee-less tip ring on the tail. It's a bulletproof attachment system.
take a look here: www.climbingskinsdirect.com/Skins.html The twin tip version is the 3rd choice down from the top. The top version shows a good picture of the bungee tip front connection and the 3rd picture down shows the matching tail ring that works better than the tail hook version shown above.
The 130mm wide, 200cm long skins with the twin tip system is $109 without shipping.
The black diamond "blem" mohair mix skins for $109 are only 110mm wide at the widest.
If you are buying skins, you want wall to wall coverage. If your skis are wider than 110mm, you aren't getting that from the gearx ones you are considering.

I have two seasons on some mohair mix blems from GearX and they've been fine. The seconds have a small round mark "burned" into the plush side of the skin near the tail that doesn't seem to affect performance.

My wife had those exact blems (same skin) for her Janaks. They had one round burn mark on them but were otherwise flawless and were $80 cheaper than retail. Get them.

I got my skins from GEARX and they are fine. They give you a coupon for $15 off your next purchase. If I still had my code I would give it to you but you might be able to dig up one from someone else.
I think they are an older year skin because they are a little thicker and a little less supple than my wife's current year skins. Also the stuff sack was a little smaller making them a bit more of a pain to put away. But other than that they perform great.

Thanks for the feedback, the mohair mix looked like a good alternative to my stiffer, less supple Ascensions and better grip than the pure mohair. Looking for more performance uphill rather than gliding. I was just shopping around for a good deal on something different from what I already have. The CSD twin tip look like a better option in terms of width availability and price.
Thanks for pointing out that the width they give on gearx is the widest, the 110 won't work for me. Will probably just try to resurrect my old G3s by removing the gunky glue. They sat unused for a few years and now the glue is really elastic-like and comes off on my hands. I never had any problems with those skins, always worked great, unlike my new G3s :
(gimicky women's G3 Alpinist=Failure).
Thanks,
Mary
