forest service rd 8040 turnarounds was created by bhesco
I'll be headed up forest road 8040 in May to Mt Adams and one concern on the narrow one lane road is areas where the road will be wide enough to do a 3-point turn; I don't want to get stuck sideways on the narrow road in snow / ice. Are there any turnouts or wider areas on 8040 (five mile section between 80 and Morrison Creek campground) to be able to turn around so I can then park pointed downhill off the road? If yes, approximately where are they located (GPS coordinates or other ways to identify it on Google Earth for planning purposes).

thx,

Brian

I'd call the Trout Lake Ranger Station before my trip were I you. They will have some idea how far up the road towards Morrison Creek you will manage to get. Bear in mind, to my knowledge that road is never plowed, it is just allowed to melt out through natural warming and 4x4 perseverance. So parking is typically as far up as the most adventurous can manage.  Wherever that happens to be folks seem to manage getting off the road enough for others to pass (and turned around to head back down). There is sometimes an occasional inconsiderate that feels no one could possibly get further up the road than him, so he just stops in the middle of the road precluding anyone else's further passage, while the road continues to melt out while he is up on the mountain. When he finally returns, he finds a barren dirt road above his rig and a log jam of POed climber vehicles below him. Once drivable, the FS goes up and clears out the winters deadfalls.
I’ve climbed and skied Adams a dozen or more times but never as early as May. I suspect you’ll have a fairly long walk and even longer if you don’t have a 4x4 to get to “road’s end”. I think if you search Adams tr’s you may find one or two that were done “out of season”. I seem to recall some that hiked 5 miles and more to Morrison Creek.

Correct, I'm expecting a long slog even over Memorial Day weekend just to get to Morrison Creek campground, especially if the expected above average snowfall this year comes to pass. Was hoping to hear there are some wider sections at some points to be able to turn around relatively easy.

A turn around at Wiki shelter is "relatively easy".
Elsewhere is "manageable" depending on what you're driving and your willingness to be "adventurous".
Wish I could be more helpful, but there are no official "pullouts" or "turnarounds" on that road that I recall.
Most folks that head up that road, knowing that it "doesn't go" just figure that they will somehow manage to get turned around when they can't go up any further. Sometimes you have to back up a ways to find a spot big enough to back into to turn around. The wise watch for them on their way up :)

A lot depends on what kind o rig you take up there. Ive done Shasta early and carried a axe ,come along ,tow strap ,chain and chainsaw. You may not have those "luxuries" if you are from out of town. A local partner might help your cause. Keep trying on partners wanted.

Are you dead set on doing the S side of Adams that early? There are a lot of other places you could hit where you wouldn't have to skin 5+ miles of road to get a trip of at least equal radness.
