NY ski hills? was created by cornRIDE
I'll be in NY this next week for work. looks like once i get there everything will shut down due to snow and ice. does that mean i just scored a free vacay to the ski hill in NY?
i'll be in Wappinger Falls (stunning metropolis that it is)
any ideas on what's near/best/actually got some vert to it??

I learned to ski in the Catskills. First choice is Hunter - more terrain relative to the other ski hills there - if it's cold they make lots of snow. Windham has the same vertical - less busy than Hunter. These are controlled, manmade snow, groomed runs. I remember lots of hard pack and ice: don't expect off piste at these areas - get your edges sharpened.

I grew up skiing at Hunter. It was fine - in 1971. A few returns 20 years later revealed a mob scene, dozens to hundreds of packed tour buses from NYC, lift lines an hour long, runs which were named after streets in NY and unfortunately matched their namesakes in population density. One day my sister got mailed by a high velocity yahoo and got a pretty serious leg injury. I concluded that skiing, while once fun, now sucked, and gave it up until I moved to WA and rediscovered what it could be.
Maybe, just maybe, on a weekday. A day when there is so much snow that everyone except your 4WD with chains is stopped from getting there.
You were not supposed to do this, but back then you could hike a trail along the ridge line from the top of Hunter West and get to the cleared but OB run which they had cut for the purpose of putting in "Y lift" to complement the existing "Z lift". It merged back to the bottom of Z lift but you had to watch not to be seen when coming back in.

Another vote for Hunter as the closest with best terrain options. Sharpen your edges and be ready to be on them all day.
If you go on a weekend or busy day DO NOT ski all the way down to the base once you're on the summit. Keep hitting the F lift mid-mountain or stick to Hunter West on the back (best - after some snow) side of the mountain. The lines on the Quad from the base can get freakin ridiculous.
YCMV (the C is for conditions) - NE skiing is either dry fluffy powder or hard base with ice underneath. Best/most snow would be in N VT, if you want to up the chances of that.
