homemade splitboard was created by Jakes_thread
I am finally getting up the guts to split a snowboard, and I was wondering if anyone has done that and ridden their creation for a few seasons who could talk about the durability and their overall feel for it.
I have limited funds, so I am planning on taking my only board and making it a splitboard primarily for use in the backcountry but would likely use it at the lifts a few times a year as well.
Am I crazy to think that is possible?

If you have limited funds the $$$ for the area rug sized skins you'll need for your new BC splitty may make you think twice before taking a saw to it. :

Jver~~
I split my own board 4 seasons ago now and still ride it in the early and late season, it likely has 120-140 days ridden. It has held up remarkably well. I would look around for an inexpensive used board on the interweb to split if at all feasible, riding the split inbounds could be a drag, but not impossible. this gives you a bit of breathing space also when hackin' into the board if something were to go horribly wrong... I have a few photos from my project if you would like to take a look at them let me know....Good Luck!

To split your own board you need the split kit ($150) and skins ($150) and a board you don't care about. If you shop around you can find a used voile split decision for about $350 and keep your solid board. That's what I'd do.

If you only have 1 tool for riding on snow and limited funds, I would think now (December) is not the time to risk cutting it in half. As recommended, I'd try it on a cheap used one first.

Check splitboard.com for more info on splitting your board. Check for a used board there as well. I saw one on there for $400 with skins and hardware, and it saves you the possibility of ruining your only board. Good luck!
