Chinook Pass- 2009 was created by Stimbuck
I want to let you all know that we are beginning road clearing and avalanche work for SR 410, Chinook Pass. The majority of our avalanche control work takes place east of Chinook Pass, though we do occasionally affect the west side of Chinook Pass and some areas above SR 123.
All of these areas from road level and below are affected by the snow removal equipment. I've seen some large avalanches reach the valley bottom that were started by snow removal equipment- the valley bottom isn't a safe place.
Our avalanche activities involve explosives and ski cutting. Keep in mind that ski cutting activities can affect a large area in a short amount of time. It's best to avoid the slopes above and below the Chinook Pass area while our spring clearing project is taking place.
Normal operations occur during the week. I will be sure to add an update if weekend activities are planned, or we expect to do any work in the Cayuse/ SR123 area. I'll also keep you posted as we get closer to an opening date.
Thanks to everyone for your cooperation.
Cheers,
Stimbuck

Thanks John for the update.
You guys have a great job, I would love to ski some of those lines out there that you control when there is more snow.
If you can post, I'm interested in hearing about unusual snowpack conditions, that you encounter on your work. Like depth fractures, or when the snowpack is drained and layers are bonding ect....if you can. Not trying to add to the paperwork, just interested for similar aspects.
Thanks,
Joe

No problem posting about the snow pack, etc. I'll try to give an update each week.
I was looking forward to some spring weather, then I read this from NWS:
"MONDAY APPEARS THAT IT WILL BE THE
DRIEST...SUNNIEST...AND WARMEST DAY OF THE UPCOMING COUPLE WEEKS."
Ahh, Spring!
