Silver skis 75th aniversary was created by Kyle Miller
Well its been 75 years since the original Silver Skis race up on Mt Rainier and it seems like the perfect opportunity to reserect a important part of Washington ski history (if only for the anniversary).  I would be interested in volunteering some of my time helping in anyway I can but cant take on the full force of putting it on.

I'm throwing this out there just to see if this is something people would be interested in.

Heres some info on the Silver Skis race
thanks to Lowell for the info

Great info and history Lowell!  Yeah, I'm with you Kyle - I would definitely volunteer my time and energy.  After reading through the stuff on Silver Skis, if we did make it a formal event, I think it may be a good idea to have a staggered/timed start.  Also, what would be a good time to plan for it...May?

The fundamental question that needs to be answered before organizing something like this is whether it will be under the radar or not. When we did our reenactment in May 2005 , it was under the radar. We did not ask for permission from the Park and we kept it relatively quiet afterward (except for discussions on TAY).

Following that event, I was contacted by a local ski promoter about doing it again sometime. He thought it could be "a great story leading to a terrific film / tv production." He also said, "I have film production people and sponsors who might jump at the chance."

This query made me nervous because I assumed that the Park Service would not grant permission for something like this. I told the promoter this and said I wasn't interested in reviving the Silver Skis in any formal way. Perhaps my assumption was wrong--I don't know.

So that's the key issue. Do you raise the question with the Park and risk getting shut down? Or do you play "don't ask, don't tell?" If you fly under the radar, it's pretty easy to organize something like this.

If you managed to get permission to hold the race, I would definitely invite Wolf Bauer to be there. He was in the original race in 1934 and is turning 97 this month. I know at least one other skier from the original race who is still around, but he does not live in the Seattle area. There may be more.

Sure would be a way for the us and the park to patch up some hard feelings.
The ski promoter is right it would make a great documentry.
Like the Silver SKis The PanAmericana road race was canceled. But it has been revived as a ralley. The park would get some good press. Even as a reenactment it would be fun. Do you think you could fly under the radar again and for how long. Better to take a stab at working with the park.
The park would probaly frown on a lot of commercialism but I know lots of documentrys have been made up there.
Did you ever see the movie "After The Fox" With Peter Sellers?

The Silver Skis race was held 10 times between 1934 and 1948. Very few skiers from the first race are still around, but I believe there are quite a few more who were in the later races.

If anything it would be amazing just to get all of them together to talk about there experiences with the race and document that.
