Safe tour this weekend? was created by Big Hurt Bob
Hello,
I am looking for an avalanche safe tour to do this weekend within a couple of hours drive from Seattle. Does such a thing exist with the current conditions?
Thanks,
BHB

Yes there are still places you can go but you have to make sure they are well anchored (lots of trees) and on the mellower side of terrain.
Scott and myself went up to Kendal stumps which I will admit is one of the most boring tours I have done in a while but we made it interesting by digging a full snowpack profile down to the dirt and testing the stability.
It failed miserably

Can someone recommend some avalanche safe tours perhaps?

Yodelin is generally a safe tour during high avy conditions. It might not be filled in yet due to the huge trees, but you could go up there and let us all know.
Kendall Knob is pretty safe if you stay down lower in the trees. But Kyle is right, it's kind of a boring tour. We were up there yesterday and it still needs more snow to be a decent ski.

About the only thing I would suggest for the next few days is Lower Gold Creek. Stay dead center in the valley, don't use the trail on the east side; which is flanked by ridge to 6000'. Don't go too far up the valley as slides can easily run out on the valley floor. I-90 is closed right now anyway; so maybe Green Lake? Avi danger is listed as "extreme" for today. This means avi's are certain. Be careful.

Yes, it's generally safe. But a few years ago I popped a slab on a rollover. It occurred below and a bit skier's left of an old concrete lift foundation and above the flat, somewhat clear area where I've seen avy schools go for field practice. This is the access route from the Stevens employee housing area (not Smith Brook) and not the treed or open, somewhat gently pitched area where people typically go to ski, which is higher and further east. To skier's left, the road switch-backs up a broad ridge here. Sorry not clearer -- can't find a decent map on the 'net just now...
