BD skin question was created by bobS
Anyone know what the purpose of the cloth "tape" down the center of BD skins is? If I cut it and peel it off will I have more gule area and better adhesion to the ski?

I believe the purpose is to make it easier to pull the skins apart (something very much appreciated on wide splitboard skins).

I also read that it was there to be able to pull them apart easier.

I recently re-glued a set of skins.  In the process I pulled the strip off, then re-set it.  I shortened the strip at the front end so the clip loop would have more sticking power.  So far so good.  It seems like you could do without the strips, if your glue wasn't too strong.

Question about cold powder days: I used my new glued skins yesterday for the first time. The first stick - perfect. The second time the skins went on, they were pretty frozen and dusted with powder, and didn't stick so well. Any solution?

The tape in the middle is there for the time when your glue is no longer sticking, it is an emergency strip that you will appreciate when the time comes.

Another trick I learned years ago was to carry some 2-3 mm perlon that can be used for traction in lieu of useless skins.

Keep'em warm - I keep mine in an inside jacket pocket when not in use; it keeps the glue warm and fuzzy.  Happy glue = happy you  :D

Lisa is correct - and removing that little strip when all else fails can make your life a lot easier.

These temps. call for keeping the skins warm in a way I haven't seen since I had to shove my 50mm skins into my shirt back in the White Mountains of NH.  As climberdave said, getting them inside your clothes is the ticket.  Just keep exposed glue surfaces away from your chest hairs; it's a very bad combo.... :'(
Brushing off the dry snow from the glue surface before folding them up has also been working this last week.
I added a strip of electrical tape down the center of my G3 skins about 3 seasons ago. It makes them rip more easily, from the bases and off each other.
