Emergency Fire Starters Taste Good Now was created by ATnicholls
So one of my skiing buddies overheard some folks suggesting that Fritos corn chips are so flammable that they can be used as emergency fire starters.
We decided some flammability tests were in order. Items tested included the following:
Fritos (regular and chili cheese)
Funyuns
Pretzels
Sun Chips
Bagel Chips
Cheetos
Doritos
Lightnin’ Bug Fire Starter Nuggets
It was quite windy when we conducted the tests, so we actually had to use REI storm-proof matches, which we felt made for ideal testing conditions.
Results:
It was so windy that the Lightnin’ Bug Fire Starter Nuggets would not light.
The only item that did light was very easy to ignite and produced a very large, steady, long-lasting flame. And the winner is: FUNYUNS!

Excellent research. Good to know. I never go skiing without Fritos, as friends can verify. But there is a problem: the fire starters are eaten by lunch time. Is there a way to preserve them somewhere deep in the pack for actual after dark emergencies? Some kind of sealed foil bag like a pop tart that is too hard to open with cold hands unless truly desparate?
