I am planning on doing a ski trip around New Year's in Canada and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas/tips/experiences from previous trips to either Fernie, Kicking Horse (Golden), Sunshine Village (Banff) or Revelstoke. The current plan is to first drive to Fernie (2 days), then to Sunshine Village (1 or 2 days), then to Golden (2-3 days) then to Revelstoke (1 day) then home (Seattle). This trip will be strictly lift-accessed skiing and no backcountry but if anyone has stayed in any of these places and has accommodation suggestions or has skied these areas and would like to share their experiences it would greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

One day in Revelstoke!!!. From what I have read, ditch the others and drive straight to Revelstoke. It's supposed to be incredible!

Kicking Horse and Revelstoke are Amazing areas but the snowpack is rather shallow around that time so be prepared to get some core shots.

If you want to do some touring Rogers Pass is one of the best areas in North America.

I haven't skied Fernie (yet...) but I did have a great December trip to Sunshine and Kickinghorse a few years ago. Kickinghorse was the more impressive mountain. We spent most of our time there. Golden is likely to have more snow than Banff, so spending some time there vs. Sunshine seems like the best bet.

I've skied Revelstoke in December with good results. I also got to sample the new mountain there last Spring and was impressed  - 5k of vert and lots of fall line terrain. Of all the places you mention, Revelstoke probably has the best odds of having some decent snow before New Years.

In terms of lodging, Powder Springs Lodge in Revelstoke is comfy. In Golden I think we stayed at the Hillside Lodge and Cabins, which was quiet and reasonable.

Can't comment on Revelstoke other than what I've heard about which is that its great, but Kicking is definitely worth checking out. Went there a few years ago and loved it. Need to go back!

I make this non-recommendation to anyone planning a trip to Golden BC.

do not stay here www.alpinemeadowslodge.com/ . We stayed there several years ago and it was one of the worst lodging experiences we have ever had. The lodge is nice, location is convenient, but the owner's wife is one of the rudest people I have ever met. There were several uncomfortable incidents during our stay, but I will describe just one.

I believe it was the second day of our stay. Breakfast was to be served at 7:00 and then we were going to ski at Kicking Horse. The clock in our room says 7:00 so we come downstairs to breakfast, but nobody is about. Soon the owner comes down to get things going, but tells us breakfast isn't until 7:00, but he'll get us going with some coffee anyway. Apparently the clock in our room was set back an hour. No big deal to us, we'll just sit around for a while. Soon the owner's wife comes down and starts freaking out. She takes him into the kitchen and starts going off on him, dropping F bombs about how we shouldn't be up so early and not to serve us anything until 7:00. We were right there, and could hear everything clearly. Anyway, we went back to the room and discussed grabbing our shit and getting the hell out of there. There's a lot more that happened, but this should be enough to justify my non-recommendation.

The other crazy thing about this woman was her reckless driving. The lodge is at the end of a very long dirt road, that is narrow with a high center with fairly deep ditches on the side. Icy conditions make the road a bit tricky, as it would be very easy to slide into the ditch. She would just fly down this road without any regard for clients coming towards her. It was like, get out of my way, I own this road. Anyway, we actually witnessed her forcing one of her clients into the ditch, and the husband having to bring his truck down to pull them out.

On a brighter note, these people in Fernie were very nice:

You get just a room in their house, but it's clean and inexpensive. They served a wonderful breakfast.
