Anyone ski Dynafits inbounds? was created by andyski
And I mean using Dynafits regularly, not just on powder days or that one time two springs ago.
Here's my dilemma: I hate my Naxos after hating Freerides for several years. Both tour just fine, but the stack height and flat and vague feeling ("I'd like to turn now. Did you hear me? NOW I SAID!") annoy the heck out of me. I yardsaled on flat at Crystal today when my right ski decided to flutter away for no reason. If I'm not leaning on my boot tongues or turning hard, I have very little confidence that the ski tip will go where I want, especially on harder snow. The Naxos are on Teledaddies.

I realize this might have something to do with lame technique, but my skill is what it is.

Yes, I could use alpine bindings/boots, but I like the option of using my MegaRides and touring if that's the better option.

I have a separate Dynafit rig, and can't say enough about the way it skis. Stiff, great snow feel, good ramp angle...perfect. I've used it inbounds with no problems, but is it really a safe way to go in terms of release? I don't want to do any tour-mode toe lock-out deals or anything like that. I've heard complaints about the lack of dampening on hardpack, but it's the PNW; how much true hardpack do we really have?

The other option would be the Duke, which is attractive because I could use my alpine boots, but is it really that big an upgrade in downhill performance from an NX21?

Aside from looking a bit poseurish and not being able to use alpine boots, what are the downsides to using a Dynafit inbounds?

I have used dynafits inbounds for the past 2 years over quite a few days. Mostly they are just fine although I have occasionally had the annoying problem of the heelpiece releasing into tele mode on powder days when I ski over a whoop-dee-doo and the ski flexes. I think they are likely not perfectly adjusted so I do not know if this is a common problem or if it is simply because of how I have them set. My din is only set at 7 however and I believe it should be at 9, perhaps that is part of the problem.

Other than that, they are just fine. Especially when it is time to take the skis off to hike a bootpack as they are so light.

My wife and several of our friends all ski their Dynafits inbounds, on a regular basis. Rarely, if ever, have an issue. I'd say go for it!

I used my Dynafit inbounds and had no problems. The only drawback, which may be a result of my experience is quickly getting in/out of the bindings. I am much quicker with the Free rides, but I prefer the Dynafit system, as I don't like the rise over the ski that one has with the Freerides.

Cheers,

Andrew

I am also interested in this subject. Last year I talked to a spry 50 or 60ish guy at Alta who'd skied dynafits in & outbounds for many years with no problems. I was concerned about prerelease, steeps, safety etc. He said no problem, though I am sure I ski much more aggressive than him. Armed with that testimonial I finished out last year on dynafits/megarides after my downhill boots fell apart. I delamed my favorite BC skis in the bumps but had no significant problem with the bindings.... Being conservative on my aging body I didn't push them to the extreme but they haven't failed me yet. It will take more miles before I feel totally comfortable going all out on Dynafits.

This Spring I am taking a mostly inbounds vacation in Europe but will go BC some. I am toying with taking only Dynafits to simplify logistics. Mostly I am concerned about 2 things: prerelease/boot retention and secondly safety of the release. Are they (nearly) as safe as a downhill bindings? I tend to rationalize safety by recalling all the bindings I've skied on over the last 50 years injury free. Still, I am really interested in any published or anecdotal info on this.

My wife is also concerned about saftey of dynafit release as she is only 110 lbs. Though she is a very good skier/former competitor she is on the back side of 50 and just doesn't want to take chances getting hurt. So she is actually looking to buying Fritschi or other for Europe as they are said to be more safe for her size. Any small women out there care to comment on this? Thanks.

I often use my backcountry gear with Dynafit bindings when I'm skiing in-bounds with my son. He's still a "blue run" skier and I enjoy myself on the light gear more than I would on my heavy-duty alpine gear.

Several times I have taken unpleasant falls when one of my Dynafit-mounted skis (usually the outside one) simply fell off in the middle of a turn. This has usually happened on smooth groomed slopes while making medium radius turns. (I don't ski moguls on this gear.)

I think what happens is that my skis get too close together (harmless with normal bindings) and the inside ski somehow clips the toepiece of the outside binding, causing it to release. It's possible that I was not fully engaged in the binding, but I don't think so.

Something to watch out for. I try to avoid letting my stance become too narrow when skiing Dynafits on packed slopes. I can't recall any such problems while skiing in the backcountry.
