Chutefest? was created by telemack
I've been seeing posts here stating that Sunrise will open June 15.  Does this mean that Chutefest will be Sat. June 16?  I'd like to make plans, 'cuz my last day teaching is June 15.  The 23rd will be fine also.

I'm now into rock-climb mode, but:
I'll drop my standards and drop the knee
For a ski goal that looks good to me.    :D

Good thinking, Mack.

Yer right on target; the chutefest season's right around the corner.

My guess as to why everyone's not jumping on the bandwagon is that it's tough to commit to a date in mid June.
Lots of access/conditions opening up and with the right weather window, many long sought trips could be prime for the pickin'... Trips like Adams, the Emmons, and the Kautz routes are just a few of the lines that sometimes folks wait for years for the right combination of access/conditions/weather & partners.

On the other hand the Sourdough Chutes can be fine skiing whatever the conditions; a great backup destination. And with a 15 minute jaunt to the car for BBQ warmth, refreshment and libation, who cares what the weather brings, eh?

In years past we've been known to ski them sat/sun for 4 weekends in a row until we can't find anymore corn to harvest. Then Joe continues skiing up there for 2 or 3 more weekends after we run out of snow!!

Right now I have Sunrise on my calendar for the first two Sundays (17th & 24th) after the opening, unless a window for a more enticing trip beckons. My guess is there'll be lots of tailgate parties up there this year as long as there's some snow in the chutes and on Burroughs mtn.

Wish we could get Eva Mesnick to start posting here. She skis all over the east side of Rainier while the road is closed. I would be nice to get advance coverage reports from her. 3 or 4 years ago there was NO snow at Sunrise when the road opened, anywhere, even in the chutes. Eva told us but we didn't believe her. We hiked up to the ridge and looked down to find nothing but rocks in the chutes the entire length of the ridge. Had to do a "Tatoosh Traverse" that year. But that'd be a bit longer to do this year.

My vote is for let's all just keep this thread going as we watch the weather and announce our intentions as the subject weekends are upon us.

Rock on.

I'm in for Sunday the 17th.
Would be up for the following weekend as well but I'm committed to helping on the glacier travel class field trip that weekend.
