Chinook Pass Opening date? was created by Eric Lindahl
Anyone have any info as to when Chinook Pass may be opening. I have a trip planned for Saturday and Chinook will save me a lot of time. WSDOT has very vague info but it seems like they should be getting close. Thanks

There should be a new update tomorrow, but my guess is it will open up next week.

There was an update on the access to Stevens Canyon via highway 123 ONLY from Packwood or White Pass.
Official letter from the park says that the access to Paradise from Stevens Canyon via Ohanapecosh entrance will open on the 25th of May.
So unseen repair work dollars are at work for you. 8)
Access from Cayuse 123 to Ohanapecosh slated for the Fall.
That bad news is the second year in a row for me since the drive around is another 3 plus hours compared to 1plus hour.
Best work on skiing the area I live closest.

Spring 2007 opening efforts update as of May 18th.

WSDOT crews are on schedule to open Chinook Pass on Thursday, May 24th at noon.

WSDOT crews have had some problems with tipouts along SR 410 after the snow has been cleared. The problem results when the large snow banks begin to melt at their bases due to heat from the road surface. This causes them to become top-heavy, which results in a large chunk of snow falling onto the road.

Maintenance and Avalanche crews are attempting to remove the hazard before opening Chinook Pass for the season. Removal of the tipouts are done with heavy equipment, including a front-end loader, and explosives where the snow is difficult to reach.
