I was down there last Fri/Sat and wasn't going to post because I figured some of the many I saw down there would.
Anyways, The first snow patches appear along the trail just shy of the junction with the Round the Mtn trail. I camped in the area where the trail crosses Morrison Creek because I was planning on doing the SW Chutes & then the off trail traverse back to camp. I was a little surprised to see the creek was still (mostly) covered with a foot of snow on it but the many campsites in the surrounding area are snow free. There's a nice staircase in the snow to gain the ridge above.
Above the Crescent Glacier, there is the typical suncupped snow all the way up to the Lunch Counter. Due to the high temps from Friday, I felt comfortable hiking up without using my crampons although I was about to use them when going above the Lunch Counter. I was making good time and about 500' below the Lunch Counter when I realized that I had left BOTH of my permits back in camp on my other backpack.
The weather on Saturday morning was weird. Cloudy, but with STRONG warm winds from the east. Anyways, I was just about to put my crampons on when I looked around and accepted the fact that I wasn't having all that much fun so I turned around.
From what I recall seeing from FS RD 23, it did look like the lower portion of the SW Chutes was melting out to a thin band but that could have been an optical illusion.
Oh- and to the party who hiked through Morrison Creek at 3am and talked about flying down to Antarctica- please be more considerate. It wasn't 2 in the afternoon and you were hiking through campsites. Thank you.

Skied the lower half of the Chutes on Sunday - that route is done for the year (discontinous up top and midway down). The real shocker was how melted out the N. side was. Only 2 large patches of ice/snow left on NFNWR & Adams Glacier looked like St. Helens (very dirty).

David, do you have a recent picture of the North side that you could post? I am most interested in seeing the NFNWR.

Toby - Sorry man, I'm in the dark ages. I took a pic on Sunday, but with my "film" SLR. It's slide film and I'll need to get them developed, then scan it. However, if you want to have a good visual of what it looked like, here's a Photo I'm inserting from Justin Ashworth's website (thanks Justin, your digital prowess saved me). It looked worse than that, but not by much.
