The true meaning of hardcore? was created by Splitter
This subject came up the other day in a conversation with my wife.  Our non-skiing and lift-skiing friends think our activity is not only hardcore, but crazy.  This prompted the question: Are we hardcore?  I figured the only group with the proper frame of reference to answer this question or identify defining characteristics would be the TAYers.

We came up with some behaviors/atrributes that might qualify a person or persons to be thought of as hardcore.  What do you think?

1) Skiing all year
2) Hiking 10 miles with an overnight pack loaded with skis just to climb/ski a couple thousand feet and then pack it all back out
3) Believing that without devils club, slide alder and a river crossing, it wasn't a real ski trip
4) Owning 10 or more snowboards or pairs of skis
5) Combining skiing and mountaineering, thus carrying a lot of crap
6) Dividing an August day into: 6 hrs driving, 6 hrs hiking, and 5 mins skiing
7) Spending more time researching trips, arranging gear and posting about trips than you will ever spend skiing (negative points for this one?)
8 ) Skiing 45 plus degrees comfortably
9) Skiing more than a certain number of days per year
10) Forgetting the crappy parts in 24 hrs or less

Is there any one of these that would qualify you as hardcore by itself?  How many might be required before you are considered crazy?

Anybody have their own definition(s)?  I have posted one stupid skier photo, if you have another, please post it.

Numbers 2 and 6 seem to characterize me.  I think I get "crazy" more often than "hardcore" from non-BC skier friends.  Oh, and if you read my Cannon Mountain post, number 10 as well.

Most of my friends think I'm crazy to hike anything for just a few turns. In the early 90s (still single and no kids) me and my friends would hike anything in search of snow, sometimes a bit rediculous but we were having fun. Marriage and kids have limited much of my summer hiking quite a bit, but my kids are getting old enough that I plan to take them up to Chinook Pass this summer for some easy hiking/riding and see how they like it (age 5 and 7). The first time I took my wife up there in '96 we ended up seeing a cougar and she wasn't too thrilled about returning.

Hardcore? I don't think so.. I don't have the spare time to be hardcore...... =(

IMHO, "hardcore" would only apply to three of those.  here's the first word that comes to mind, for me, for each one ...
;D

1) Skiing all year  dedicated
2) Hiking 10 miles with an overnight pack loaded with skis just to climb/ski a couple thousand feet and then pack it all back out hardcore
3) Believing that without devils club, slide alder and a river crossing, it wasn't a real ski trip ridiculous
4) Owning 10 or more snowboards or pairs of skis rich
5) Combining skiing and mountaineering, thus carrying a lot of crap hardcore
6) Dividing an August day into: 6 hrs driving, 6 hrs hiking, and 5 mins skiing unappealing
7) Spending more time researching trips, arranging gear and posting about trips than you will ever spend skiing (negative points for this one?) common
8 ) Skiing 45 plus degrees comfortably hardcore
9) Skiing more than a certain number of days per year dedicated
10) Forgetting the crappy parts in 24 hrs or less distractable

personally, the only ones I have a history of (as of yet) are #5 and #7

You have to draw a line between hardcore, and merely obsessed. And that line is paved with challenge, pain, and fear. The more ???, :'(, and >:(, the bigger the :D, ;D, and 8) when you make it. But that can be an expensive game to play.

This almost sounds like those REI commercials they play on the radio.
