1.5 inch surface hoar was created by mej
Drove over Blewett Pass yesterday night. Stopped at the summit to check out the snow and found hoar crystals that were as big as 1.5 inches across, although on average they were 3/4 to 1 inch. They overlay several inches of faceting snow. I'm not sure how representative this is, but with the inversion and other factors influencing its distribution this hoar/faceting could make things tricky once more snow falls.

Saw much smaller hoar at Snoq pass today, but it was still present. Hopefully it will rain on it before it snows on it?

It looks like it will rain before the precip turns to snow Wednesday or so.

Saw big hoar crystals (~1 inch) at the pass today... yeah, hopefully it will rain on it, and above the snow level there probably isn't too much hoar remaining due to the insane winds.

We saw the hoar today on
Skyline
and wondered about future stability.

I saw big hoar at the pass at about 5600 on well sheltered slopes yesterday. You're right though, Phil, most slopes up higher are pretty wind-effected and not showing the surface hoar (TG seemed to be forming underneath, but not on the surface). It will be interesting to watch what the next storm does or doesn't do the potentially nasty layers...
