Trips to the Olympics? was created by Nappingonarock
I've been reading trip reports for a while now, but I don't think I've ever read any from trips to the Olympics. Is this just not a popular place to go, or is there something more ominous about the area?

Thanks,

nick

There is only one plowed road -- to Hurricane ridge. Which is a fine small area to ski -- but a long journey from the Seattle area. Other places in the Olympic range offer fine tours -- the Seven Lakes basin for example. The weather is generally wetter and the approaches less convienent than the Cascades. Perhaps the skiers in Kitsap, Jefferson and Clallam counties haven't discovered TAY yet...

That makes sense. I figured it would be a little wetter over there, but that doesn't stop me from looking out across the sound and seeing the white caps...

Who knows, maybe I'll check it out first-hand this year.

Thanks again,

nick

If I recall correctly, the Blair ski guide for Washington has a section for the Olympics. It may be a place to start if looking for tours.

Hurricane Ridge has a cool little old-style ski area. A couple rope tows and a poma. Great for families. There are some good winter tours on the ridge as well. Jack at the Olympic Mountaineering store in Port Angeles is one of the local gurus.

A few years ago, "Old Larry" was posting reports about the Olympics over on telemarktips.com. That was before the site got hacked and all the old postings were lost. I haven't heard from Larry recently (and I haven't been reading TT.com much). Larry and a few friends have spent years trying to ski all the glaciers in the Olympcs (a classic turns-all-year project). They tend to be pretty low-key. I assume they know about TAY.com.

During my frequent ski day-dreaming I have ofter thought of trying to retrace the route of the group of old-timers who crossed the Olympics in winter around the turn of the century, I think it was.

That would be a burly trip to say the least. ??? Anybody know if that trip has been repeated. There is a brief paragraph about winter touring in the Olympic Rock Guide and about the early exploratory trips.

I second Lowell in that the guys in the Port Angeles store know all about the goods out there and are willing to share if asked nicely.
