February 19, 2014 - Mt. Baker was created by jj
Having spent the last two days at Crystal we figured it was time for a change of scenery. So with a favorable forecast and the offer of a free cabin in Glacier to stay in for two days we headed up to Mt. Baker on Tuesday night.

We awoke to 8 inches of overnight snowfall. There was no way such a paltry snow total be worth our time given the 2+ feet we skied the day before at Crystal? Oh, how wrong we were...

We rolled into the lot at Baker just as the lifts started spinning. The tribe of skiers and riders were doing a great job of self-organizing into full chairs and the circus of Crystal the day before seemed very distant. Hoots and hollers of the people ahead of us were the first clue that we were in for something special.

The 8 inch dump Baker received skied MUCH better than the 30 inches at Crystal the day before -- light and fluffy. Pan Dome hadn't opened the day before so the best parts of the mountain had about 18 inches of fresh powder. There were virtually no lift lines anywhere and we jumped from lift to lift tallying up the powder runs. Chair 6 was spectacular. The snow was so soft that we were able to huck off every obstacle with impunity.

My biggest reaction to today is what a difference great snow makes. I felt like a much better snowboarder today on the Baker powder than I did yesterday on the Crystal snow. My skiing friend had the same reaction.

Sorry, no pics or video due to powder fever.

Yesterday was also much different (meaning much better) at Crystal than it was the day before.

Snowboards are obviously not very efficient at Crystal.

indeed, congrats on your new fav place. tell all your buddies how good 8 inches is at the northern resort. all snowbord enthusiasts should consider a season pass there.

That's a bad idea. I suggest converting to skis and sticking with Crystal. The locals up north are all a55holes.
