Thursday - A bomber groomer day.

Groomers were freshie-hard-pack.  Several days of inch-a-day snow have made the groomers smooth, silky and fast.  I tuned my edges this morning before waxing and I was able to look like bomber skier on my powder skis.

Boilerplate:  The good ice.  Enough of a texture to get a grip on.  Yes, the steeps had boilerplate, and I did such a master job of side slipping... woo hoo! Sharp edges make a difference.

And off groom was dicey.  Sometimes a promise of four inches of pow... but rough underneath.

Made some runs down Green Valley Bowl... fast and smooth bomber ride.   However, the ride to Snorting Elk Bowl was pretty rough.  The traverse across the bowl was a nasty roller coaster ride emptying out to a frozen mogul field.  When I tried a little off groom in what looked like pow.... it was like there were ice fingers under the snow trying to grab my skis.   Well, that was a lot of work.

So groomers good, steeps were slick.  Not enough snow to bury the ice.   I did find some pow that had a slight crust... just had to pick up my skis a bit to work a turn.

Weather - foggy in the morning, especially the mountain tops.  Fog was clumpy.. here and there,  high and sometimes low.  Folks were avoiding the Rex in the morning waiting for the fog to clear.  Things started to clear out after lunch and we were skiing in filtered sunlight.  By two and three o'clock... a beautiful scene with the sun pouring over the ridgeline creating nice shadows on the snow.

There was chatter about Jay Buhner (esteemed Mariner baseball player) snowboarding on the hill.... I think he was spotted in the Summit House Restaurant and then on the slope.  Ya know.... I have been to Park City several times and never saw any of the famous celebs that are talked about..... must be too focused on skiing.

I saw Jay Buhner today, he parked right next to me in A lot. The rumor is true....it was plain as day when he stepped out of his Mecedes SUV and looked at me. Then I was like...."hey thats The Bone man......". It was unmistakebaly him.

i've seen him several times at snoqualmie. he said, "watch my backflip!" and then cased it getting off the chair. i blamed it on my brother whom was the slacker top shack bum who wasn't shoveling the ramp. nonetheless, a rightoues fellow who i grew up watching out in right field at the dome. really nice guy and down to earth.

On a lift ride I chatted with a snow boarder who showed me an interesting feature on his snow board.

-  First he told me that his board was rockered instead of cambered.  This allows more edging underfoot on hard surface slopes.

- Then he showed me the rippled edge, a wavey edge - about three or four lateral ripples in the center part of the board.  He said it really helps on the boiler plate.  That looked a little strange.

Seems to me that the board is not set for carving turns, but more set for a side slip grip...  He should just get some skis... with a lot more edge.

Lib Tech also makes skies with the wavy edge. Supposed to really grip on ice. They call them Narrow Ass Snowboards and sell them as singles. www.libtechnas.com/frNas.html Only heard one review from a lift op that really liked them. Haven't seemed to catch on however. Kkz
