|How I got started skiing year-round: I found myself consistently skiing from October to July and figured I should just do August & September. I had a couple other 12 month streaks before my current streak really stuck. :) Now it's been going on for too long to let it end. My goal is 120 months, but I think that's an initial goal, I'm sure it will change (grow).|
Criteria for what counts as a ski trip: I need to ski 1000 vf for a month to count, if my Suunto says 1050 or greater, I call it good.
Biggest threat to my streak: I got married in the spring of 2003 and had a 10 week honeymoon in the works for the summer. My wife is not a skier so it took a bit of negotiation to convince her that I should escape for a couple of ski days on our honeymoon, but she knew what she was getting into when she married me so it wasn't a big issue. I skied in June before I left and hit Perisher Blue in Australia for July. Since I was traveling very light and w/o a car the trip to Perisher took 3+ hrs each way on the bus and it was rather cold in my travel clothes, but it was fun... In August I hit Hamner in NZ. These two months were my only times on fixed heel gear in about 10 years...that was about as strange as skiing among eucalyptus trees.
Type of equipment I use: I ski Tele, started on Fischer GTS's w/ 3-pins and Asolo Snowfields in 1993? Now I'm on Atomic Tele Daddy's, G3 Ascents & Garmont Ener-G's
Strategy for skiing through the low season: Friends and beer. Go early in August & September and late in October, unless a storm hits early.
Worst and best backcountry ski trips: The worst trips were the summer after El Nino, September was just really tough. Best...wow, that's hard to say, do I have to pick one? January '99 at Wells Grey, powder between the knees and nipples on every run, good friends and comical guides, 8K vf on Mt. Snoqualmie in calf high powder March of 2006 (Slot, Middle Fork and Phantom), Sobbing Sarah (run) at Sentry Lodge in February of 2005, the terrain at SME, the SW chutes July 1, 2006, hitting the Paradise Glacier and Nisqually Chutes in a day this past May (2007)....
Skiing activities in the past year: This past year has been a big year for me as I now have a daughter so my ski days are fewer and all that more valuable....
