Associated trip report: Russ, Matt, and I went skiing at Sunrise on the first day the Sunrise road opened. The marine layer fog topped out at about 5500, and it was really warm above. We parked at Sunrise Point and skied two runs on Dege Peak. The snow was really smooth at the top and great skiing, more suncupped lower down (best runs of the day). Then we drove to the lodge and went up to the Antler Peak runs. We found the top of Fear Factor but it had a 20' bare section just below the steepest part, so we went back to the main Antler Peak run. Again good at the top and somewhat suncupped lower (this was the pattern everywhere - I think there was still some newer snow at 6600-7000 making it smoother). From the bottom of that run we skied down a little more and then skinned west through Huckleberry Basin, past the little runs along there and on to look at the bowl near Mt. Fremont - potential run there but going fast and big cornices at top. We went up to the ridge then back east to the top of the little run into Huckleberry Basin and did it (same pattern). We were all pretty tired from the week and called it quits. Charles |
